What is an alpaca?
Lucuma is a slow fashion and sustainable company, we are involved in almost each part of our supply chain, conscious of the impact we are committing to the environment and people involved. We decided to work with alpaca because it is one of the most sustainable fibers of the planet. The fleece is a lustrous and silky natural fiber. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and bears no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic. Moreover, alpaca’s fiber doesn’t need to be treated to remove the oils or lanolin that other's wool contains, (we will talk more about how environmental friendly alpaca is compared with other fibres, inclusive cashmere).
The fiber is also flame-resistant and meets the US consumer product safety commission’s standards. This fiber is soft and luxuryious and can last for an extremely long time. This is another of the qualities why we kept an eye into alpaca's fiber, because the products produced by LUCUMA are not so fashionable and therefore they can be used for years, moreover the capacity of the fiber to maintain its durability makes LUCUMA’s usable for years and as consequence be more environment sustainable.
